general strike news

Shame on you all.
Lillian Spencer

04-May-04 - I can't believe what has transpired over the last week!

I am reading the proposal, and what does it say???

The retroactivity goes back to May 1st instead of April 1st. And you agreed to this?

As for capping at 600....I say bullshit!

What happened to you all? You can't read that this doesn't include agreements under the Health Sector Partnership Agreements Act. You ALL know that this is what they are trying to do, privatize everything.

They tried with Saint Mary's, but ended up just closing us down completely. Once again, there is no cap!!! I see that employees who leave because of contracting out get some severance, but what of those who are without jobs because of outright closures, or downsizing?

Those figures aren't even in the picture of job losses!!! As for arbitration, isn't that what the Teachers union did, and didn't the government create another bill that went against the arbitration? What happened to standing up for the rights of ourselves and others?

There should have been no agreement made until Bill 37 was repealed, and then there should have been NEGOTIATIONS!!!!!

Has everyone forgotten what that means? There has been nothing done to prevent job loss, and there has been nothing done to protect patient care.

With all the contracting out, downsizing, hospital closures, how can anyone even think that patients will get anywhere close to the care they deserve? I am sad to think that I had believed the union leaders at the BC Fed convention when they had said that they would do what it took to make this government take notice.

I really thought that civil disobedience, and a general strike would happen if things got much worse. Boy was I wrong!

I have been preached too over the past two years saying that we must get the members to stand up and fight. To make this happen, the leaders must lead by example. I must say that the majority of people I have talked to HEU members or not, are extremely angry that our leaders, and Jim Sinclair, let us down.

I think that the real issue is that none of the union leaders wanted to have fines or end up in jail.

I feel sorry for all the remaining HEU members, as although it is too late for me, I had hoped for a much better outcome for my brothers and sisters.

On closing, thank you to Georgia Miller, Linda Hargreaves, Joanne Foote, Cathy Pinsent, Louise Hutchinson, Kelly Knox, and Casey O'Hern.

And to Casey O'Hern, for taking a stand against a Provincial Executive who, in the most part, do not practice what they preach, and hung the "little" guys out to dry.

Shame on you all.
